About

Hi I’m Frances Tout, a Community Librarian at North Somerset Public Libraries. My role has responsibility for outreach, equalities and volunteers across North Somerset, I also line manage two village libraries and the mobile library.

I am lucky enough to have been selected as this year’s winner of the Travelling Librarian Award, the award is sponsored by The English-Speaking Union (ESU) in partnership with The Chartered Institute of Library and Information Professionals (CILIP).

As an outreach and community librarian I am very keen to research and develop new ways to engage with our communities and keep libraries relevant. In America there have been a number of recent initiatives in libraries and community engagement has become high profile. The three week study tour I will be undertaking in September/October 2015 will be primarily focused on learning about the wide range of innovative community engagement programmes delivered by public library services in the United States.

I hope to build relationships with colleagues in the United States, creating opportunities for collaboration and sharing best practice to enhance library services.

I will be concentrating the majority of visits along the east coast of the United States heading from Boston to New York, The Hudson Valley, Philadelphia and Washington DC and then moving inland to Chattanooga.

I hope that you will visit my blog regularly and join me on my adventure. Any advice, travel tips etc., gratefully received!

I intend to update the blog periodically during the planning stages of my trip and regularly once the study tour is underway.
